Premio Nazionale Don Giovanni Iantorno in Sapri/Italy 2012
Giornale del Cilento on July 27, 2012: The honoring will take place to keep alive the memory of the person, charisma and great humanity of the parish priest Don Giovanni Iantorno. He had taken over the management of Protestes at the end of July 1979, which led to the opening of the hospital in Sapri. He also took great care of the families and ►youngsters in the village.
On the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of this ►people protests, the national prize "Don Giovanni Iantorno" was created by the committee composed of Domenico Ciardi, Luigi Conticelli, Antonio Calabrò and Giuseppe Morabito.
Don Giovanni Iantorno was more than a priest and pastor who did his best for his community. Every day he was in action with the population of Sapri and especially with young people. He was at the forefront during the protests of 1979 to demand the opening of the hospital. A protest that on July 28 of the same year led to a large Demonstration of the people.
The prize will be presented to ►Don Pino De Masi, Vicar General of the Oppido-Palmi diocese and advisor of the Free Network for the Gioia Tauro region. He stood in the front row during the protests with the immigrants in ►Rosarno.
The motivation for the recognition of Don De Masi is that day after day he put his own person on the line to help the weakest through actions of denunciation, protection and support against the interests of the various criminal organizations, ►'ndrangheta in primis'. A model to follow, as Don Giovannino did.
The awarding of the 'Don Giovanni Iantorno' prize, scheduled for Saturday 28 July at 9 p.m. at the Town Hall of ►Sapri, will be preceded by a meeting in Piazza Plebiscito and a torchlight procession to commemorate the event, which will begin at 7.30 p.m.
During the ceremony a video will be shown with some images from the life of Don Giovannino and a radio interview that the priest made with the journalist Tonino Luppino in August 1979 using the microphones of Radio Sapri.
The event is under the patronage of the Municipalities of Sapri, San Giovanni a Piro, Casaletto Spartano, Ispani, Sanza, Torraca, Tortorella, Morigerati, Roccagloriosa, Caselle in Pittari, Torre Orsaia and Vibonati.

Rosarno is a hotbed of the 'Ndrangheta, a ►Mafia-type criminal organisation based in Calabria. The local 'Ndrangheta dominates the fruit and vegetable businesses in the area, according to Francesco Forgione, a former head of Italy's parliamentary ►Antimafia Commission. Several powerful criminal clans originate from the town, such as the ►Bellocco, ►Pesce and Ascone ►'ndrine. In October 2008 the mayor of Rosarno, Carlo Martelli from ►Berlusconi's ►Forza Italia party, was arrested for having links to organised crime and of having illegally favoured businesses linked to the ►Piromalli family, one of the 'Ndrangheta's most powerful clans, from the nearby town of ►Gioia Tauro. The former mayor was completely cleared of all charges in July 2009 after a year of legal battles with the 466/09 Corte d'Appello di Reggio Calabria decision.
In December 2008, the entire town council was dissolved on orders from the central government and replaced by a prefectoral commissioner because it had been infiltrated by 'Ndrangheta members and their known associates. Source: ►Wikipedia
